Friendly faces help your new space feel more like home

It’s moving day! You’re surrounded by everything new – new streets, new spaces, and even new faces – but if the thought of meeting those new neighbors makes you want to dive under the nearest rug, you’re not alone!  It’s not unfriendliness or unsociability that sparks the impulse, but rather, it’s simply a case of too much newness all at once! Moving into a new home can be a bit disorienting at first, and some of us simply need a little time to settle in before we engage with the outside world.

Why not start with a simple hello?  A cheerful greeting can go a long way toward helping you start off on the right foot  — and here are five more tips for making those friendly connections that will help your new neighborhood start to feel like home.

Knock, Knock

Begin with a neighborly wave as you drive by, then work your way up to a face-to-face introduction! Remember, timing is everything. You don’t want to disturb your neighbors in the middle of dinner or while they’re struggling to get a fussy toddler down for the night. Try to catch them when they’re already outside, or aim for a weekend afternoon when everyone is much more likely to be relaxed and open to a brief, friendly chat. Don’t delay introductions too long, though; if too much time passes before that initial “hello” things can start to feel awkward.

Magic School Bus

Accompany your children to their early morning stop.  You’re likely to run into at least one other parent who can fill you in on both neighborhood and school events — and people love to talk about their kids, so you won’t have to worry about awkward silences or finding common ground. It gives you a great opportunity to exchange contact info and invite the family over for some outdoor fun.
