Trina’s Top-Notch Advice — A Savory (and speedy!) Fall Supper

Your slow cooker puts a hearty meal on the table in no time!

As our autumn weather gets cooler and we start spending more time at home, it can be difficult to decide what to make for dinner. That’s when I turn to the slow cooker!  I have one that lets me brown meat before cooking, which makes life super-easy on days when my family is craving something savory for supper.  (My slow cooker’s name has been withheld to protect its identity!)

My all-time favorite slow cooker meal is a rump roast – it’s so flavorful and easy to prepare, it doesn’t even require a recipe!  Just season the meat liberally with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper (I like using my pepper grinder). If you’ve got fresh herbs available, add those, as well – I don’t think you can go wrong with any seasoning you want to include!

After browning the seasoned roast, I add vegetables to the bottom of the slow cooker – usually carrots (the thicker the better, so they don’t grow mushy while cooking), a white onion (sliced) and potatoes. Check your crisper and use the veggies you have on hand! I’ve tried all varieties of carrots, potatoes, and cabbage (I love cabbage!) and they are all delicious with this slow-cooked roast. Then simply turn your slow cooker to “low” heat and get on with your day! The slow cooker traps the steam generated from cooking, so you’ll wind up with a roast that’s tender and juicy. On work days, my roast usually goes in at around 7:30 AM, and it’s ready to eat by 5:30 or 6:00 that evening.

If you aren’t a meat eater, try roasting a head of cauliflower instead! Simply season with salt, pepper, grated Parmesan, and lemon, or baste it in garlic butter before roasting.  Cauliflower takes less time to cook (usually 3 to 5 hours, depending upon size) so plan ahead to avoid being surprised by mashed cauliflower instead of tender florets!

With the help of my slow cooker, I can give my family a hearty, home-cooked meal without spending hours in front of the stove — and that gives us all more time to enjoy relaxing around the table together!  Why not give it a try yourself this Autumn?
